A Wells Fargo statement does not read as one list — deposits, cheques and withdrawals sit in separate blocks, each with its own total. We rebuild a single date-ordered list from those blocks, then check that nothing was gained or lost in the rebuild: every block total must still reconcile, and the whole must bridge the opening balance to the closing one. Where a statement carries a running balance per row we check every adjacent pair instead, which is stronger. A file whose arithmetic does not close is flagged rather than quietly handed to you.
