Retention differs by product: Bank of America states checking and savings statements stay available online for 18 months, while credit card eBill statements are quoted at 24 months. Older copies can be requested. If you need a full prior year at tax time, check the window for your account type first.

What a Bank of America statement looks like inside

  • Transactions are split into labelled sections — deposits and other additions, withdrawals and other subtractions, checks, service fees — each with its own repeated Date / Description / Amount header. A converter that assumes one continuous table can miss entire sections.
  • Because deposits and withdrawals sit in separate sections, the statement as a whole is not one chronological list. Each section is ordered on its own, and a single timeline has to be rebuilt by merging them.
  • The checks section packs two entries side by side on one printed line rather than one per row, and marks a gap in the check sequence with an asterisk.
  • Transaction rows use MM/DD/YY dates; the four-digit year appears only in the page header, not on each row.
  • US number formatting throughout — comma thousands separator, period decimal.
  • Statements downloaded from bankofamerica.com are text-based PDFs, so no OCR is needed. A photo or scan of a paper statement still works, but goes through the image path.
  • Long ACH and CHECKCARD descriptions wrap onto a second line within the same transaction — a naive line-by-line reader turns those into phantom extra rows.

How we check a Bank of America statement is right

Bank of America splits a statement into labelled sections and prints a subtotal under each one, plus a beginning and ending balance for the period. Those printed subtotals are the anchors: the rows we pull out of each section must add up to the section total the bank printed, and the sections together must bridge the beginning balance to the ending balance. Where a statement also carries a running balance per row, we use that instead, because checking every adjacent pair is stronger than checking a subtotal. A file whose arithmetic does not close is flagged rather than quietly handed to you.

We deliberately do not state whether your Bank of America statement carries a per-row running balance. The real statement we examined had none, but we could not confirm that holds for every current account type, and we would rather check your actual file than assert something we have not verified. Bank of America is not one of our per-bank verified parsers, so we quote no accuracy percentage for it — the reconciliation result for your file is shown on screen before you download.

Things worth knowing

  • Deposits and withdrawals are in separate sections, so the order in the PDF is not the order the money moved. We rebuild a single date-ordered list.
  • The paired two-checks-per-line layout is a common source of dropped or doubled rows in generic table extractors.
  • Online retention is 18 months for checking and savings but 24 months for credit card eBill statements — worth knowing before you rely on pulling a full history.
